Trans Healthcare: Trans youth conversion efforts on the rise again
Despite legislative efforts to prevent the known harms of conversion efforts or reparative therapies directed towards LGBTQI+ people, there is evidence they’re continuing. Some local mental health care providers and other professionals, along with some religious groups, continue to oppose law reform directed towards preventing psychological conversion efforts directed towards people seeking help for gender identity-related issues.

At the same time, they claim that gender affirmation is the real “conversion therapy” – in keeping with beliefs that identities other than cis are “disordered,” an echo of the ongoing religious views of some that “homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered.” Other more subtle rebranding is also underway, with some psychological techniques familiar to those previously exposed to conversion efforts or reparative therapy continuing to be practiced, but now ambiguously described as “exploratory [psycho]therapy” or “not ‘affirmative,’ but neither are they conversion practices.” The key argument promoted by proponents is that scientific evidence of the benefits of affirmative care is weak at best, or illusory, and that medical interventions come with multiple risks. By contrast, these critics are mostly silent on the strength of evidence around the effectiveness and harms of conversion efforts. Time will be reserved for audience comments and questions.

Reclaiming Queer Pride, Power and Safety after experiences of Sexual Trauma

There is powerful energy in our queer pride, sexuality and gender diversity that can support healing for those who have experienced sexual trauma. Impacts of sexual trauma are not a lifelong sentence, nor is it your fault, nor is it what defines you. Transforming experiences is more than possible. Hope abounds and liberation awaits.

This session is a dynamic workshop* that focuses on approaches to healing, transformation and empowerment. All are welcome.

It will cover:

  • Reframing our understanding of triggers and how we can use them to enable healing

  • How reclaiming queer pride and queerness can transform shame

  • Tapping into our agency and choice to experience our ‘powerful-self'

  • Using the wisdom of the body to create safety and celebrate all the wonderful queer parts of ourselves

*Safe enough space: Belinda will begin by discussing session boundaries and supports to create a 'safe-enough' container for all. This includes outlining limits to sharing details of individual experiences of trauma within the space. There will be opportunities after the session to connect with Belinda and other support staff if you need individual support with your experience, and this is warmly encouraged.

Asexual experiences in healthcare
The 2021 Asexual Lived Experiences Survey received 1600 responses, one quarter of which came from Australia. A large section of the survey was devoted to experiences, both positive and negative, within the healthcare system. Our data has revealed the reasons why asexual patients do and don't disclose their sexuality, the healthcare professionals they are disclosing to, and the outcomes of these disclosures. Qualitative data has allowed us to identify many DOS and DON'TS of asexual healthcare. The data, along with anecdotes collected during our team's advocacy work, reveals that education for healthcare professionals must be a priority.

Lesbian Post Menopausal sex: endings and beginnings
There is a missing conversation around the ageing post-menopausal body and sex. Information available is presented through a medical lens, suffused with patriarchal and capitalist notions on the worth of women. Not only are post-menopausal women invisible, but they are also portrayed as dry, shrivelled, barren, useless. There is no space for explorations of joyous and adventurous sexuality after menopause.
The patriarchal gaze further pollutes sex between women, at once dismissing and diminishing the powerful and sometimes transcendent physical experience in lesbian sex. Ideas of “lesbian bed death” and “companionship” are examples of patriarchal tools use to control power and independence.
Peggy will present a brief historical understanding of female sex after menopause through the narrative of the patriarchy and compare and contrasts her actual lived experience of menopause and post-menopausal sex. She hopes to start a safe, trans inclusive and informative conversation on joyful post-menopausal explorations of sex.

LGBTQIA+ Healthcare - where we're at and we're we going?
Come prepared with your questions for this Q&A session, or listen to others and be inspired.

LGBTQIA+ folks still experience health inequity. From experiences of lack of gender recognition, or assumptions about sexuality, to lack access, funding and education within the health industry, differences in health experience and outcomes still differ widely for LGBTQIA+ users and providers.

We want to know what have been your challenges with health, where are the gaps in healthcare provision and education? How can the LGBTQIA+ health workforce make the most difference? If you work in health what have been your challenges and how would you like to see your profession change? Do you know examples of where effective change has taken place? What can we learn from each other that will help us create better health outcomes and working conditions for us all?

This session will run like a Panel Q+A session with a compilation of the most prominent speakers from the Health Stream of the Better Together Conference. We'll bring our ideas together and discuss the most pressing challenges for the different parts of and to the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole.

We will explore the reasons these challenges persist and seek to map out tangible solutions for better health for all.
This session will be interactive and we expect the audience to ask questions of the panel.

Ending Domestic Violence in our community: How do we do that and who should be doing the work?

Where is early childhood in the queer space?
The early childhood education and care sector has long been left out of queer discussions. Though children are deemed vulnerable, and research supports that young queer children are present in early childhood space, not enough has been done to ensure that their voices, and the voices of their advocates, are present in wider conversations.
The panel seeks to present its stance that the early childhood sector plays a significant role in supporting queer children and their families. The panel seeks to question why early childhood is systematically left out of the queer space and what advocates can do to shift this discourse. The panel seeks to share the ways in which it is currently working to include the voices of queer children, educators and families in a more prominent ways within the early childhood sector.

How will your session contribute to driving positive change for LGBTIQA+ communities?

Queer children are here now, but the systems and supports around them, particularly in early childhood settings, are not. The panel seek to bring this to the forefront of participants thinking and instil a sense of passion and drive to contribute to advocacy measures for change in this space. The panel hope that through engaging in this discussion, other members of the queer community will seek to learn more about early childhood and the role it plays in children’s lives.

How can national LGBTIQA+ advocacy organisations be as representative and accountable as possible?
Just.Equal Australia was formed in 2016 to represent and advocate for LGBTIQA+ Australians. We have worked on a number of issues including non-discriminatory marriage equality, trans and intersex workplace protections, an end to the Religious Discrimination Bill and blood equality. We regularly survey the LGBTIQA+ community so the community drives our priorities and strategies. We also partner with community-based initiatives to share knowledge and platform new campaigns. But we acknowledge the need to be more representative and accountable. In this workshop we seek feedback on the ways in which a national advocacy body can be more representative of, and accountable to, LGBTIQA+ people.

Living on The Intersection: Bi+ Experiences
Bi+ peeps, allies and anyone who yearns to make space in their life for every aspect of themselves is welcome.

This is an interactive panel where your voice is welcome and your engagement is embraced whether silent or otherwise.

Bi+ peeps will continue to navigate challenges, questioning or disregard as long as the social and familial norms find the Bi+ spectrum too confusing, too dynamic, too much!
As a result, a person can channel a singular focus on sexuality or by contrast, delay their discovery and settling in self.

This panel will hold a microphone to the experiences of the everyday person.  45mins to listen to events, moments, discoveries and reveals of the multiple versions of self which dance and mingle across the intersections of Bi+ identity.

I hope to hold space across age and stage of life from the Bi+ community who found a way to honor who they are and where they have been, making room for change, healing, growth and possibility.

Spiritual not religious: On being comfortable in my own skin
In this interactive workshop, I introduce a developmental way of exploring the sacred. This recognizes the complexities of the human journey and the importance of developing our own sense of self. It is about being comfortable in our own skin. For example, for those from the Christian tradition, this is about leaving behind the Sunday School God, and developing an authentic sense of the self and the sacred. The workshop will consider the necessity of outgrowing dysfunctional religious and family systems, finding inclusive and compassionate communities where we can thrive.

What is Acephobia?: Boring data made interactive
The 2021 Asexual Lived Experiences Survey is the largest survey ever to look exclusively at asexual people's experiences of violence and discrimination. It asked respondents from across the asexual spectrum about their experiences with microaggressions, with religious discrimination, healthcare, physical violence, sexual violence and intimate partner violence. The results enabled us to form a picture of how asexuals experience violence, the patterns that are present between and across cultures, and begin to understand who the perpetrators of this violence are. In many cases, the results were surprising. This survey was broad and covered so much that it produced absolute mountains of statistics - and while we want you to read it, we also want to present it to you in a way that helps you understand its context, remember the key details and relate to the hundreds of respondents who were generous enough to share their personal stories with us. This interactive workshop will present our results to you in a way that is memorable, by inviting you to be an active participant in exploring the data with us. Both our quantitative and qualitative data will be shared with you in a way that is not just slide after slide of facts and figures - but participatory, so that you are involved in interrogating the information recieved and learn more about what acephobia is, who the victim/survivors are and, armed with this new information - what our next steps might be.

I would like to speak to Allies of the LGBT+ community about how to be supportive of their friends and relatives who are beginning this journey of gender diversity. How to look after themselves as Allies, and also continue to nurture the relationship that they might have with the person who is beginning to transition. As a young, Transgender person, I feel I have a unique and powerful perspective on how to have a healthy conversation and reaction to the whole experience of "coming out". Where I can tell you my experience of family and friends "reacting" to my transition, but not "rejecting" my transition.

Beyond Binaries: Identity and Sexuality
This interactive and engaging extended session explores how we assign labels to our complex experiences of identity. We explore the landscape of sexuality, conduct a thought-provoking anonymous survey of those present, and look together at the data. How do we identify, privately and publicly? Where do we locate ourselves on sexuality and gender continua? How old were we when we came to our identities? How a[sexual] are we? How well do our friends/family members understand us? This program will change the way you think about labels and deconstruct binary systems of identity.

Don’t leave me this way - inclusive end-of-life planning
COTA SA’s Rainbow Horizons project is encouraging us to proactively prepare – so we don’t leave our friends and loved ones in a way where they are unsure of our wishes or unable to facilitate them. By preparing, we can feel confident our wishes will not be overridden by others such as unsupportive biological family or medical professionals.

This important initiative, delivered in partnership with Office for Ageing Well, is designed to create greater cross-generational support in relation to end of life planning, care and dying to:
• Facilitate conversations between LGBTI+ community members about end of life care, planning and dying, both between LGBTI+ elders and between elders and younger members of the LGBTI+ community.
• Build and trial an intergenerational LGBTI+ ‘compassionate community' model that supports end of life care, planning and dying.
• Develop a model that can be replicated elsewhere in the future.
• Engage with relevant service providers who will support a trial LGBTI+ compassionate community (such as funeral businesses, aged care providers and palliative care services).

Following consultations with LGBTI+ community members in six SA locations and with a diverse range of service providers, a co-design workshop was held. This resulted in the development and testing of a trial model for an intergenerational LGBTI+ compassionate community. Come and hear what we’ve found so far and where to next. Be inspired to take action in your own life and include those close to you to support these important stages of our lives.

The Rainbow Horizons project is scheduled to conclude in June 2023. More here https://cotasa.org.au/programs-and-services/rainbow-hub#rainbow-horizons

Since 2018 Many Coloured Sky has enabled the growth and development of Queer Refugee and Asylum Seeker Peers (QRASP), a peer-led social support group, a safe space and a comprehensive set of programs and responses to the needs of LGBTQIA+ people seeking asylum in Australia. QRASP now has more than 220 members from twenty-eight countries. This workshop will explore the strategies Many Coloured Sky undertook to support QRASP, the multiple and complex challenges that LGBTQIA+ refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia face, and the impact that our combined work is having for this disenfranchised group. We'll articulate the role and relationship of Many Coloured Sky as ally to QRASP as the lived-experience group, and propose and describe a model for queer allyship across borders and intersections, including with LGBTQIA+ refugees and displaced people in East Africa and the Asia Pacific, outlining the central role of peer support, community development and structured capacity building activity.

Introduction to Older LGBTQIA+ Peoples Housing and Homelessness
Older LGBTQIA+ people are more likely to live in poverty and experience homelessness compared to the mainstream population due to both the complexity of their experiences and difficulty accessing services. While older LGBTQIA+ people are at a greater risk of homelessness, they often do not recognise this risk or know where to go for help and information about their housing options. HAAG uses peer-led early intervention methods to connect with people and provide support to access services, address barriers and maintain secure housing. Come and listen to the Housing for the Aged Action Group's community educator talk more about the issue and what we can do together to affect change!

Affirming environments and improved mental wellbeing of LGBTQA young people.
A combination of qualitative and quantitate data from the Writing Themselves In 4 national survey of 6,418 young LGBTQA people in Australia aged 14-21 years will be presented, illustrating the importance of affirming environments and interpersonal interactions for the wellbeing of young LGBTQA people. Responses to open-ended questions regarding experiences of affirmation and what makes young people feel happy provide insight into the importance of affirming environments and interactions with others through the words of LGBTQA young people. Additionally, quantitative analyses of the data specifically explore the role of affirming workplace and educational environments for wellbeing, assessed through a series of questions exploring whether participants felt safe and comfortable to identify and express their LGBTQA identity in their workplace or education institution. These outcomes highlight the importance of future initiatives to ensure that workplaces and educational institutions are not just inclusive of LGBTQA young people but affirming of their identities.

CANCELLED: What We Chose To See - A story beyond research, statistics, doctors and data
Please be aware that this session has been cancelled.

48 years in 20 minutes, a queer country kid growing up in the 70s, surviving abuse, living with D.I.D and finding personal power through therapy, grief, acceptance and love.

A story about a country kid's life to the present day. A humourous and serious tale which draws attention to the multiple layers of being different. Not just "Intersectionality" and all of the statistics. A real life in a 20 minute story form.

I'll tell you what it's like to live with Disassociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D) and be pansexual, non-binary and neurodiverse in an age when mental health was never discussed and if it was, then the person was to be locked away.

To be the only kid in an isolated country town and then in a small city in the 1970s and realise they are wildly different from everyone else. Traumatised at a very young age by adults who are meant to protect them, ongoing trauma of domestic violence, the terror of thinking they were just plain crazy, therapy, self-medication, finding self-acceptance, living with the great love of another and losing that love to suicide. Grief and healing and the discovery of personal power through finding their community and their voice.

What We Chose To See - A story beyond research, statistics, doctors and data -

Through being vulnerable and promoting visibility of the multiple layers of a person's life, having honest discussions about mental health and seeing a real person behind the data, research, statistics and programs, I hope the session will change even just one person's life. For them to feel safe and be seen, to help them not feel alone and for the community to know, that all of the layers of life, our childhood, sexuality, gender, mental health, disability and experience give us personal power and make our lives matter.

The themes are:
Spotlight on the breadth of mental health diagnoses facing LGBTIQA+ communities in Australia; - talking about more than depression and anxiety.

Safe Spaces and Support for the stories and voices of LGBTIQA+ communities in Australia outside of "Queer Organisations" from the Bisexual+/Pansexual POV.

Elevating the voices of our most marginal communities for LGBTIQA+ (specifically Bisexual+/Pansexual/MGA/Omnisexual) people, living with disability/disabilities and the need for accessible, visibility and services in rural and regional Australia.

Primary prevention the #StrongSafeFabulous way
#StrongSafeFabulous is a national primary prevention initiative delivered by Prosper (Project Australia) and Rainbow Families, to support the prevention of family violence in the LGBTIQA+ community.

Initiated in early 2020 as a community-led, government-funded project, the initiative has harnessed national networks, social media campaigns and the development of an impressive suite of digital resources to successfully attract corporate funding and reach national audiences.

This session will highlight key project successes and challenges, walking through the prevention campaign journey, from concept to creation; consulting with all letters of the rainbow, identifying community needs, developing and leveraging online assets and building partnerships to expand the reach, impact and success of the #StrongSafeFabulous brand and its messaging.

Sins of the church: Naming religious baggage and moving on
We recognize the importance of pioneering work in academia and activism on gender and sexuality. Today, diversity is the norm. It is celebrated. It is also important to recognize any religious baggage we may have accumulated along the way, and to hold institutions like the church to account. In this talk, I examine the church’s misuse of power, the culture of shame, the fear of the feminine, the weaponizing of biblical texts, the invention of sodomy, and the rise of Christian fundamentalism. So, this is not simply an exercise in church-bashing, but a timely critique that may help us on the way.
